Gross minting, however, does not translate directly into net circulation: a portion of newly created tokens typically sits in treasury or authorized addresses, held as float pending distribution through partner exchanges and OTC desks. The metric that actually moves market liquidity is the delta between issuance and subsequent redemption — the net change in tokens held by external, non-issuer-controlled wallets.
Within that framework, USDC's 2.67% weekly rise represents genuine absorption rather than token-parking. Tether's market capitalization held at $183.17 billion over the same period, with its issuance pace roughly tracking Circle's in absolute dollar terms but producing a smaller percentage gain given the larger base. The gap between the two issuers remains structural rather than cyclical: USDT's offshore distribution footprint and entrenched presence in non-US corridors continue to anchor its dominance, while USDC captures a growing share of regulated US institutional flow and DeFi collateral use.
Plumbing under the peg
When both Circle and Tether expand supply in tandem, the if-then path runs predictably: authorized participants deposit dollars or dollar-equivalents at the issuer, receive freshly minted tokens, and distribute those tokens to exchanges or directly into smart-contract collateral pools. The arbitrage loop then tightens around the $1.00 reference price. As fresh supply enters circulation, it absorbs selling pressure across trading pairs, compresses bid-ask spreads around parity, and lowers the funding-rate cost of holding long positions in crypto-denominated markets.

USDC's banking-rail dependencies create one concentrated point of friction; Tether's reliance on less transparent reserve composition introduces another. Both peg-maintenance models perform adequately under steady-state inflows; both face the same theoretical ceiling when liquidity withdrawal velocity exceeds the issuer's ability to settle redemption claims within acceptable timeframes. Monitoring that redemption queue length, rather than the headline minting figure, is the diagnostic that matters for peg integrity.
